Disebalik sesi fotografi untuk majalah DIVA keluaran September 2007.

Saya sebenarnya langsung tidak ingat tentang ‘photoshoot’ ini. Sudah separuh jalan ke tempat kerja baru saya teringat yang saya ada janji temu dengan editor majalah tersebut di Myth Studio, Damansara Perdana.

Terus saja saya memutar stering kereta kembali ke rumah dan capai baju yang sesuai.

Janjinya pukul 10 pagi, 10.30 pagi baru saya muncul di Myth Studio yang sering digunakan untuk ‘photoshoot’ majalah-majalah antarabangsa seperti HerWorld, Cleo dan sebagainya.

Kredit perlu diberikan kepada jurugfoto yang cukup professional dan panatariasnya yang pandai membangkitkan mode saya.

JAKARTA, 13 Sept (Bernama) -- Selepas menggegarkan pantai barat Sumatera, gempa bumi berkekuatan 6.4 pada skala Richter (SR), yang diumumkan berpotensi menyebabkan berlakunya tsunami, menggoncang pula Sulawesi Utara pada pukul 4.48 petang pada hari pertama puasa di bulan Ramadan.

Data dari Badan Meteorologi dan Geofizik Indonesia (BMG) mencatatkan gempa itu terjadi pada kedalaman 30km, pada jarak kira-kira 291km ke timur laut Bitung hari ini.

Jurucakap Pusat Gempa Nasional Indonesia di sini berkata bagaimanapun sehingga pukul 6.30 petang belum ada laporan mengenai sebarang kerosakan harta benda atau kemalangan jiwa.

Katanya dengan kedalaman pusat kejadian gempa itu hanya 30km, gempa berkekuatan 6.4 SR itu berpotensi menyebabkan badai pembunuh tsunami dan telah meminta penduduk di kawasan pinggir pantai supaya sentiasa berjaga-jaga.

Media massa tempatan pula melaporkan gegaran gempa itu paling kuat dirasakan di bandar terdekat Naha, manakala di ibu kota Sulawesi Utara, Manado dan sebuah Bandar lainnya Sangihe, gegarannya dirasakan lebih lemah.

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Sept (Bernama) -- Penghuni bangunan tinggi di Lembah Klang sekali lagi cemas apabila digegarkan kesan daripada gempa bumi berukuran 7.7 pada skala Richter yang berlaku di wilayah Jambi, selatan Sumatera pagi ini, 12 jam selepas gempa kuat berukuran 8.2 SR di Bengkulu semalam.

Gempa bumi pada 6.49 pagi ini memberi kesan antaranya kepada bangunan Menara TM (Telekom) di Lembah Pantai, Menara TH Selborn di Jalan Tun Abdul Razak dan Hotel Nikko di Jalan Ampang.

Jurucakap Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Jalan Hang Tuah berkata pihaknya menerima lebih 50 panggilan daripada orang ramai mengenai gegaran itu sejak pukul 7.55 pagi.

Sebagai langkah berjaga-jaga penghuni bangunan-bangunan terbabit telah diarah keluar dan hanya dibenarkan naik semula selepas 45 minit.

"Setakat ini keadaan terkawal dan pemantauan dari semasa ke semasa diteruskan. Pihak Jabatan Pertahanan Awam (JPA3) turut membantu memeriksa bangunan terbabit bagi mengesan sebarang keretakan," katanya.

Seorang kakitangan di Menara TM ketika dihubungi Bernama berkata semua kakitangan yang berada di menara itu pada masa itu diarah keluar setelah gegaran dirasai.

"Kami rasa gegaran itu kira-kira pukul 8 pagi dan pihak keselamatan meminta kami mengosongkan bangunan. Setelah pemeriksaaan dibuat kami dibenarkan naik semula pada 9.30 pagi," katanya.

Keadaan serupa berlaku di Menara TH Selborn apabila kakitangan yang bekerja di situ merasai gegaran kira-kira pukul 7.55 pagi, yang memaksa mereka mengosongkan menara itu sementara menunggu jurutera Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur tiba.

Beberapa mercu tanda seperti Menara Kembar Petronas dan Menara Kuala Lumpur serta Alor Star di Kedah tidak mengalami kesan gegaran akibat gempa bumi di Jambi pagi ini.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Menara Kuala Lumpur Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad berkata: "Jurutera telah memberikan laporan kepada saya. Gempa bumi itu tidak memberi sebarang kesan kepada bahagian kepala atau di bawah menara. Keadaan di Menara KL adalah selamat."

Katanya keadaan Menara Alor Star juga selamat.

Eksekutif Perhubungan Media Petronas Riduan Zulkifli berkata keadaan Menara Kembar Petronas setinggi 88 tingkat juga selamat.

Hill_mie87 has volunteered to help proofread this Encyclopedia and has also directed me to a free download for a very good Malay/English dictionary.

The dictionary includes usage examples, and a very intuitive and easily-understood graphic user interface (GUI).

You have to download this the MyKamus dictionary program to your desktop or software folder and then open it and decompress it to install it. It downloads without any toolbars or other PC killers. Although it tries to install itself in the computer start-up files, my SpyBot Antivirus Program dialog boxes appeared and offered me the option of installing the progam in my computer without installing it in the computer start-up folder. Even though I don't want the the program to start automatically when the computer starts, the program still works without installing it in the computer's start-up folder.

Gempa Bumi Kuat Melanda Selatan Sumatera, says Bernama.

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Sept (Bernama) -- Gempa bumi kuat berukuran 7.9 pada skala Richter melanda selatan Sumatera, 155km barat daya Bengkulu, Indonesia dan 718km barat daya Johor Baharu pada 7.10 malam ini.

Kenyataan Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia di sini menyatakan gempa bumi itu berlaku di 4.5 darjah Selatan dan 101.0 darjah Timur.

Menurut kenyataan itu, penduduk di kawasan pantai terutama di Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang dan Perak dinasihati supaya menjauhi kawasan pantai.

Gegaran turut dirasai di kawasan Barat Semenanjung Malaysia.

Sementara itu, JAKARTA digegar gempa bumi berukuran 7.9 pada skala Richter beberapa minit lepas.

Maklumat awal yang disiarkan televisyen tempatan menyatakan gempa bumi yang berpusat di sekitar kepulauan Bengkulu itu berpotensi tsunami.

Di JOHOR BAHARU, gegaran turut dirasai sehingga menyebabkan orang ramai terutamanya di bangunan tinggi keluar ke perkarangan bangunan masing-masing untuk menyelamatkan diri.

Jurucakap Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Johor, Saiful Bahari berkata jabatan itu menerima banyak laporan daripada orang ramai khususnya yang tinggal di bangunan tinggi seperti kondominium Bukit Saujana, Taman Desa Cemerlang, flet Bukit Cagar dan juga di Gelang Patah.

Saiful berkata jabatan itu telah menghantar anggota untuk membuat pemeriksaan di bangunan-bangunan tinggi yang terlibat.

Di KUALA LUMPUR, Jurucakap Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Jalan Hang Tuah di sini ketika dihubungi berkata jabatan itu menerima banyak panggilan daripada orang ramai melaporkan bangunan dan rumah pangsa mereka mengalami gegaran.

Katanya keadaan itu menyebabkan penghuni dan pekerja di bangunan tinggi terbabit bergegas keluar untuk menyelamatkan diri.

7.9 Magnitude Quake Jolts Southern Sumatra

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale jolted southern Sumatra Wednesday.

The quake occurred 155km southwest of Bengkulu, Indonesia and 718km southwest of Johor Baharu in southern Peninsular Malaysia at 7.10pm (Malaysian time), the Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a statement.

Tremors were also felt in several areas along the west coast of the peninsula.

Although there have been no reports of tsunamis thus far, the department has advised residents of coastal areas of Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Penang to stay away from the beach.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, an earthquake of this magnitude had the potential to generate a widespread tsunami that could affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean.

In JAKARTA, occupants of tall buildings, including the 20-storey Wisma Antara, rushed out into the streets following the quake.

Bernama correspondent in the Indonesian capital, Mohd Nasir Yusof, said he was on the 19th floor of Wisma Antara when the tremor shook the building.

"Fearing for the worst, everybody just ran out of the building," he said.

Similar scenes were repeated in JOHOR BAHARU as people flocked to open spaces when they realised what was happening.

State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, Saiful Bahari, said it received many calls from people staying in high-rise buildings such as those in Bukit Saujana, Taman Desa Cemerlang, Bukit Cagar and Gelang Patah.

He said the department would conduct checks on the buildings concerned.

In KUALA LUMPUR, a Jalan Hang Tuah fire station spokesman, when contacted, said that people had been calling to report that the buildings they were in had been rattled by the quake.

The tremors were felt in areas like Pandan Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Jalan Klang Lama, Kepong, Cheras and the government office complex in Jalan Duta, he said, adding that firemen had been despatched to such locations to monitor the situation.

He urged members of the public to remain calm.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ A powerful earthquake hit Indonesia on Wednesday, causing buildings to sway in at least four countries, and authorities issued a tsunami warning for much of the Indian Ocean region.

The undersea quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 and hit at about 6:10 p.m. (7:10 a.m. EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was centered 65 miles southwest of Bengkulu, on Sumatra island, at a depth of 9.7 miles, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for wide areas of the region.

"Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean Basin," it said, warning that waves could hit Indonesia and Australia within an hour, and Sri Lanka and India within three hours.

Residents in Bengkulu _ where at least one building was demolished _ said the quake triggered panic and that people ran inland.

"Everyone is running out of their houses in every direction," according to Wati Said, who spoke by cell phone standing outside her house. "We think our neighborhood is high enough. God willing, if the water comes, it will not touch us here."

"Communication is cut, we can't call out," she added. "I don't know how you contacted us. Everyone is afraid."

The temblor could also be felt in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, 375 miles away, where office workers streamed down the stairwells of tall, swaying buildings.

Some people in high-rises in neighboring Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand also felt the quake.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

In December 2004, a massive earthquake struck off Sumatra island and triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, including 160,000 people in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh.

Kontroversi sekolah Bahasa Arab

On September 7, 2007, Bahasa Arabs in New York State ("negara") demonstrated and confronted (or were confronted by) police ("polisi").

From what I can gather here, there is a curriculum ("kirikulum") debate raging in New York "negara" (state) over the role of Arab langauge and culture in the curriculum taught to Arab-(American) students and others.

Judging by the photograph, Frank Gaffney, "Presiden Pusat Kajian Keamanan dan Kebijakan di Washington," is demanding a multi-cultural "kiriculum" that would include Arab language and culture.

It has become fashionable in American politics to assert that education in "madrassas" (Arab religious schools) necessarily leads to increased terrorism.

On January 23, KSFO Morning Show hosts Melanie Morgan and Lee Rodgers repeated the accusation, first made by InsightMag.com, that "researchers connected to" Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) have said that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "spent at least four years in a so-called Madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia," even though the story has been debunked by CNN, and the Clinton camp has denied any involvement. Nonetheless, Morgan and Rodgers repeated the allegation while adding a new, equally baseless accusation that the story came from the campaign of former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC). MediaMatters.Org

Since Barack Obama was educated as a child for a few years in a madrassa, the political purpose of the discussion at this time is to make Barack Obama seem foreign and strange, subtly associating him with America's fears of terrorism and of everything and everyone who comes from beyond its own borders (xenophobia), particularly people who are not white and/or don't speak English.

Since the dawn of American civilization, in the colonies before the Union, we have had raging debates over which language(s) would be spoken and taught in schools. Attemps to compel immigrants to speak "English-only" are a way of putting immigrants on the defensive, making them feel unwanted, scape-goating them for unrelated economic, social and political concerns, constantly creating and reinforcing a paranoid "us vs. them" approach to the world.

Children are caught in the middle of this struggle, with politicians and social activists believing, perhaps correctly, that they can control the direction of the country by controlling the education of its children.

Meanwhile, educators perceive an essential role of language acquisition in the child's self-image and sense of place in the American context. Education advocates who are primarily concerned with the children and their communities often emphasize the empowerment that comes from maintaining fluency in one's own native language and culture. On the other hand, political advocates primarily concerned with reducing immigration and maintaining control over American society and institutions are often heard advocating that immigrants adopt American language and culture as quickly as possible, believing the maintenance of immigrants' language and culture to be irrelevant or even harmful to second-language acquisition, cultural, political and social assimiliation.

Once again, I am very grateful for the following comment by "Blogger 6 tahun," but I just don't know what this comment means, because I'm not literate in Malay yet. Nonetheless, I'm posting the comment below, where everyone can see it, and I'm going to at least state what words I recognize and what words I can figure out.

With time, I'll return to this comment and add additional analysis, as it becomes more comprehensible to me.

Contextually, this comment is in response to another anonymous comment that addressed "bahasa Kifli kau, the "Kifli Language."

This comment begins with the introduction, "YTH Anonymous." If this were English, "YTH" would mean something like, "with respect to the comments of Anonymous" or "apropos anonymous." In all likelihood, YTH is an acronym for a Malay phrase with which I am unfamiliar.

Picking the low-hanging linguistic fruit once again, I notice the following cognates here:

1) Memberi: This may or may not be related to the words "member" and "remember" in English. The word "memberi" is not inconsequential in Malay, because Sedakar uses the word as the title of a blog post and eight times within his text.

The Freedom Spirit also uses the word "memberi" in the title of a blog post and some ten times within a post, including the "memberikan" variation. The word "langsung" appears once within Freedom Spirit's "Bahagia Memberi" post, which references a 2001 film with "Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, dan aktor kocak dengan seribu wajah Rowan "Mr. Bean" Atkinson."

The word "penulis" reminds me of the word "pen," and I note that it appears with a quiver in the logo of the Akademi Penulis Karya Bestseller. If there is an "academy" to teach penulis, associated with best-sellers, then perhaps "penulis" means "writing"?

I believe that "Komunitas Penulis Indonesia" may be an Indonesian Writing Community.

Linguistic Curiosities

1) Langsung: The word "langsung" appears both in "Blogger 6 tahun's" text and in the text of the blog post above. In both cases, the word "langsung" appears in the context of a discussion of "memberi." The first syllable of the word "langsung" is similar to the first syllable of the English word "language," which undoubtedly is why it attracts my attention.

Hypotheses

The above comment MUST be about writing, both because it uses the word "penulis" and because it comes in the context of a discussion of the writing of the Kifli Encyclopedia.

Thank you so much for visiting my Encyclopedia, and for confirming my hypothesis that the language I am studying is, indeed, Malay -- a hypothesis I only developed after several hours of studying the Target Text which is one entry in Kifli's blog.

I have always wanted to learn an Asian language, preferably by traveling to Asia, but lack of money has prevented me from doing so. And I could make little progress with Chinese, because the characters are so foreign to my English-language eyes. However, something phenomenally serendipitous happened to me a few weeks back and I would like to share it with you:

I was checking my site meter to see who had visited my blog and how they found out about my blog when I realized that someone from Malaysia had visited my blog, coming from a blog called "Behind the Scene." Intrigued by this visit from afar, I clicked through to Behind the Scene and learned about the fascinating life and work of young Kifli Bujang, whose blog as served as a tiny window into a country of which I knew literally nothing before. I call my blog an Encyclopedia of the Kifli Language, because it is literally a study of ONE blog entry written by Kifli Bujang, taking in other studies for the purpose of understanding this one blog entry, the "Target Text."

As Amir observed recently in comments at the Encyclopedia,

Of course you are right that the language in which Kifli writes is called Malay! But the particular way in which he writes is "The Kifli Language." My insistence on this name, like every aspect of my Encyclopedia, is a product and acknowledgement of my own ignorance, because when I started studying Malay I had no idea what language I was looking at. I am still almost completely ignorant of your language and your country, and probably will be for some time, unfortunately, even with the greatest efforts to dispel this ignorance.

I would like to find the money to travel to Malaysia, exchanging more quickly my ignorance for at least a rudimentary knowledge of Malaysian culture, language and people, but long-distance travel is not always so easily accomplished. Malaysia is a long way away.

It would be terribly presumptuous of me to try to write an encyclopedia of an existing language that has over 26 million speakers in several countries. But, writing an encyclopedia of a fanciful language so whimsically named as "The Kifli Language" is really a humble acknoweldgement of my own ignorance, with no harm to Kifli intended either.

I hope Malaysian people will both laugh with my project and find it endearing, a compliment from afar to a people, a culture and a country about whom many of us in the West unfortunately knows far to little. :(

I know it is silly to call Malay "the Kifli Language," but that very light-hearted attitude of self-deprecation helps me never to take myself too seriously. I am glad that Mr. Bujang also seems to perceive my project as humorous and a compliment not because I have any special status to confer, but rather simply because of unexpected attention from afar.

It would be far more insulting to call my Encyclopedia an encyclopedia of "Malay," considering that my every description is a mere ignorant hypothesis, many of which will have to be revised or discarded entirely as more information becomes available.

For the time being, I hope that when people write to me in Malay they will not insult me very often, because I still don't understand what you're saying. But, I will someday! :)

Please agree that it would insult the Malay language and people far more at this time if someone so ignorant as myself presumed to write an "Encyclopedia of the Malay Language" rather than an "Encyclopedia of the Kifli Language." :)

Kifli Bujang is a 29 year-old television news reporter in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Today, he briefly visited my blog and so I like to give him a shout out, repost one of his diaries here, and tell you a little bit about Kifli, based on his MySpace page.

Kifli is a Muslim and Asian. Like me, Kifli loves to travel, speaks English and likes to speak Spanish. (See below.)

His full first name is "Zulkifli," but everyone calls him "Kifli." Like me, he's 5'5" and has a graduate school education, is heterosexual and would like to have kids someday. (I have three step-children, but would someday like to have a flesh and blood child as well.) Kifli is single, but at least a few women would like to marry him.

His tastes in music include Keroncong, Classical Jazz, Swing Jazz, Smooth Jazz and R&;B, which means he has excellent taste in music!

Waterfront, (Kuching, Sarawak) 18th Ogos , 2007 ("Ogos" obviously means the month of "August" in Malay, because this was posted in August and the word "Ogos appears between the day and they year which, fortunately, are written in numbers here.) -- Kali pertama dan terakhir menjejakkan kaki ke pinggir sungai Sarawak yang berliku-liku ini ialah sekitar 7 tahun lalu. It would appear that Greek and Latin-based words that would end in a "y" in English will end in an "i" in Malay. More relevant to the word "testikel," it would also appear that words that end in "icle" in English, e.g. "testicle," will end in "kel" in Malay.

This would also seem to indicate that Malay often uses a more literal and simple phonetic spelling that, nonetheless, will make sense to English speakers because the phonetic script, in at least some cases, is similar to that of that of English.

It is not known at this time whether the pronunciation actually bares any direct relationship to the spelling.
